Ingredients

European

4-10 slices

Bread

4-10 slices

As needed

Olive oil

As needed

1-2

Garlic cloves (optional)

1-2

To taste

Mixed herbs (optional)

To taste

Directions

1. Cut bread into cubes (you can use dry bread, but not stale).  If a plain crouton is desired, place bread cubes on a baking sheet and drizzle with a little olive oil. Place in a medium-high temperature oven.  Ever 5-10 min, check the croutons and stir them around. Once well browned, remove and let cool completely before storing.

2. For a more flavorful crouton, after cubing the bread, add olive oil to a large frying pan.  Sauté a small amount of the garlic.  Toss the bread into the pan and toss until coated.  Place the cubes on a baking sheet and sprinkle with mixed herbs. Bake as directed above.

Notes:  Use croutons to garnish any soup, or salad. They can also be used to make stuffing, or eaten simply as a snack.
