Cornmeal

500 g

5 ½ c

Water

1 tsp

Salt

Butter

Directions

Prepare Mămăligă* with measurements given above.

2. While still hot, spread a thin layer of Mămăligă on the bottom of a greased pan.

3. Top the layer of Mămăligă with a layer of your chosen spread.

4. Quickly and carefully spread another layer of hot Mămăligă over the top. Set aside to cool and firm up.

5. Once firm, cut into a shape you like and serve like small finger sandwiches.

                                                              

Notes: When cooking Mămăligă, stir the cornmeal periodically to avoid burning the bottom of your pan. Keep the flame low.

 

Variations: Experiment with different types of jams, spreads and sauces. For savory appetizers try grated cheese and herbs or green onions, tomato sauce, Zacuscă, sautéed mushrooms*, or cooked spinach. For a sweet version, try jam, drained compote, honey, or nutella.
